Your Questions, Answered

  • The time that someone is in therapy is highly individualized. For some, they just need a few months to process or work through a very specific event. For others, it could be a more long-term journey as they navigate the various seasons of life. We typically allow you to lead this part of your therapy journey. If you feel that you’ve gotten everything you need out of therapy, great! If you feel that you need the additional support long-term, that’s great too!

  • As psychotherapists, we are not licensed to prescribe medication. However, we can refer you to a prescriber and continue to meet with you to discuss how the medication has affected your level of functioning.

  • In the first few sessions, we will take a deep dive into your life (how/where you grew up, family dynamics, schooling, common themes, etc.) to get a better understanding of you as a person. While we don’t stay in the past, the past can inform us as clinicians, but also you as a client, of common patterns and how they have impacted you across the life span.

  • This is dependent on you and your presenting issues. However, we typically start out at once a week. Whenever you get to the point that you feel you can manage for longer than a week, we can titrate to every other week. As improvements continue, we can potentially move to monthly sessions. However, if there are financial constraints that will not allow you to meet weekly, we can definitely look at meeting less frequently as well.

  • Therapists are not one-size-fits all. This is partly why we offer a free 15-minute consultation. We like to see if you feel comfortable with us and if we’re fully equipped and qualified to work with you. Just like you wouldn’t go to a podiatrist for heart issues, we would not provide therapy to you if you had presenting issues that we were not qualified or equipped to work with. This does not mean you are “too much” for us; simply that it’s not the right fit. And that’s ok. However, if you feel comfortable, you feel heard, and you feel that you are benefiting from therapy, we’d love to keep working with you!

  • While having virtual sessions offers flexibility, there are some limitations. Legally, we can only provide services if you’re physically in Texas during the session, as our license is only for Texas. Additionally, for safety reasons, we will not hold a session while you’re driving. We will ask that you pull over and park while having the session or schedule for a different time or date.

For the sake of your own privacy, confidentiality, and ability to get the most out of your session, we ask that you’re in a confidential space by yourself. We find that people are often less likely to be open and honest when others are around them or if they are in a public space.

  • Luis is a Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) and Amber is a Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). Both indicate that we are master's-level mental health professionals trained to provide therapy for concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, and life transitions. While our training backgrounds differ a little (LPCs are typically trained through a counseling framework, while LCSWs are trained through a social work framework that also considers the impact of family, community, and social systems), we’re both qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health concerns. As it relates to individual therapy, the therapy experience is often more influenced by the therapist's personality, specialties, and approach than by the specific license we hold.
